Any form of exercise/activity produces a requirement for extra energy. The applied nutritionists` job is to recognise what that specific energy requirement is, and then provide a means of meeting that need. The average person in the street has an energy requirement of between 2000 to 3000kcal per day. Depending on what type of exercise or activity is taking place, this may increase by an extra 500 to >1000kcal per hour. These figures are dependant on the type of event, fitness of the individual, environmental conditions etc.The applied nutritionist has to provide the correct balance of macronutrients (protein, fat and carbs) and micronutrients (vitamins , minerals and trace elements). Because of the sheer volume of food sometimes required, it is sometimes necessary to use meal replacement drinks. The same can be said for hydration, the increased sweating and electrolyte losses need to be addressed, failure to do so, will result in a possible poor performance. The need for specific pre and post competition meals is paramount, as these will enhance overall performance and recovery. Also during competition there is a need to refuel, so performance can be maintained. The challenge of the AN is to provide sound advice and support, and provide detailed nutritional recommendations that are applicable to each athlete, and each event. |
