Torso Training and Core Stability This is the most common area of the body that Personal Trainers are asked to prescribe exercise for. The wish for people to flatten their stomachs, or achieve a six pack is aesthetically driven; others may want to increase abdominal strength / endurance for a particular sport, or to aid rehabilitation or prevention of back problems. I prefer to use a combination of functional and traditional exercises to achieve stabilisation. The example I give to clients is of the super fit gym user, who after a session in the gym goes to their car and pulls a back muscle as they get in the car! They have been maintaining neutral spine and correct form throughout their programme, but with no rotational work. As you get in the car, you crouch bend and twist. |
